Philippines: Protests Over Flood-Control Corruption Turn Violent in Manila

On Sunday, tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Manila to protest alleged corruption in government flood-control projects. Demonstrators clashed with police at multiple locations, including Ayala Bridge, Recto, and Mendiola, throwing rocks and firebombs. The unrest resulted in over 200 arrests and at least 50 people hospitalized, including nearly 100 police officers who were injured. Some protesters were detained for allegedly setting fire to a truck.

US: Brush Fire Burns Over 100 Acres Near Dublin and San Ramon in California

A brush fire, named the Parks Fire, burned in the Tri-Valley area near Dublin and San Ramon, California on Friday afternoon, August 22. The fire, fueled by grassy terrain along the Dublin-San Ramon border near Camp Parks and the former FCI Dublin prison, grew to about 118 acres and was 25% contained by evening. Fire crews from Cal Fire, SRVFPD, ACFD, and Camp Parks’ fire department responded, and authorities said the fire posed minimal threat to structures by the evening.
